Virgis Stakėnas

Virgis Stakėnas was born in 1953, a year of snake, six a.m., in Šiauliai. Intellectual of province – wears glasses and sprouts beard. Not a vegetarian, not an abstainer, sometimes a smoker.

Studied medicine, but waves of life carried away to music. He created over 300 ballads during 30 his years of working on scene. As he says, writes words for over authors melodies if he is asked. V. Stakėnas publishes not only musical records, but he has fixed his creation in the book „Ballads“. He performs alone, but he invite different musicants for his records. He feels good thus much with 5 people, thus much with 5000 people audience. If he wants, he compels audience to dance, sing or whistle. He had established a singing poetry studio (together with Vytautas Kernagis they are considered to be the progenitors of singing poetry genre in Lithuania) which worked for eight years in Šiauliai. He collects and popularizes global Country, Bluegrass and Folk music examples. The progenitor of Lithuanian country music festivals movings, the iniciator of „Visaginas country“, „Juod‘Country“, „Once more over Easter...“, „The salt“ festivals. The compere of TV shows like „Country party“(Lithuanian radio and television), „Mana-Mana“ (Šiauliai television). The president of Lithuanian country musicant association. V. Stakėnas credo is that his world of creation „keeps on three dorsums of whales“:

1. White americans country-bluegrass music and their optimism;
2. Black americans primitive folk blue and his wisdom;
3. Lithuanian folk and its spirital roots.
